The Gunners made a spectacular comeback against the Italian champions, AC Milan, but were denied from progressing at UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. They nudged up a superb 3-0 victory over the visitors but were denied in progressing at this major
European football tournament.
The Invincibles recently revived themselves and avenged their first-leg defeat against the 18-time league champions Liverpool and their arch rivals, Tottenham. They tumbled over the Reds with a 2-1 away victory while the Gunners slaughtered their domestic
rivals after bouncing back from 0-2 to 5-2.
The Gunners high spiritedly entered the Emirates stadium and were fully confident of recovering from a disappointing 0-4 shock at San Siro. Laurent Koscielny kindled the spark with a superb header in seventh minute. He impressively received the ball from
the local rising star, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and netted past Christian Abbiati.
The hosts dominated entirely in this half and fired several shots. In 26th minute, Theo Walcott impressively passed a low cross and with the help from poor defending by Thiago Silva, the ball went towards Thomas Rosicky. The Czech showed his class
and shot low into the bottom corner, ultimately leading the Gunners to a 2-0 lead.
The Red Army maintained their intensity and three minutes to half time, Oxlade-Chamberlain was sandwiched by Antonio Nocerino and Djamel Mesbah, subsequently awarding a penalty to the home side. Arsenal’s captain, Robin Van Persie took the penalty and after
sending the opposition keeper to the opposite side, he took his team 3-0 up.
Unfortunately, Arsenal could not maintain their intensity in the second half. Van Persie and Gervinho both squandered chances to shot an equaliser. On the other hand, Nocerino tested Wojciech Szczesny twice but the Pole brilliantly warded off shots. In the
final few minutes, Walcott was substituted by Ju Young Park and the formation was officially 4-2-4 but at times it seemed to be 4-0-6.
In the end, Arsenal easily bagged the game with a tremendous display of their skills and abilities. However, they failed to overpower AC Milan after trailing 3-4 in the aggregate and exited from the Champions League from the round of 16.
