Samsung ES8000: A full preview of the 2012 model – Part 4
Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 6:25:27 by Usman KhalidThe Fitness app assigns the user a virtual fitness instructor with a host of exercises and software to keep tabs on the developments in your weight loss or body physique. It also splits the screen to show the user what he is doing in an exercise as compared to the trainer.
The Kids application has a number of features in itself. The parents can use the parental control services through this app and can also set-up a timer to switch off the television at night or when the kids have to go to school. Moreover, the parents can set-up medals and certificates for kids on good performance and eventually the kids can exchange them for a real-life treat from their parents.
The conventional remote control has been tweaked a little from last year’s model. However, that is not news. The astonishment comes with the new Smart remote that has new functionalities apart from volume and channel control.
Along with the visible volume and channel buttons are four perpendicular dots that launch four menus at the four edges of the screen.
The left dot gives access to the history of activities done on the television, be it TV watching or web browsing. The top button launches the appropriate tool bar for the running application. The right dot launches different tools like Settings, wallpapers et cetera. The dot at the bottom launches the full menu of the appliance.
The Smart remote also has a touch-pad in between the dots that can be used to move the cursor around instead of using hand gestures. The pad can also be used to scroll through the channels quickly with the traditional scroll gesture used on laptop track-pads. Moreover, the peripheral also has a microphone for voice recognition if the user is sitting far from the television.
And last but not the least, Samsung has nestled a joy-stick at the back of device. Pressing and holding it would turn off the TV. However, as a joy-stick it can be used to navigate through menus, scroll through lists and control volume and channel surf.

I just read at http://www.talktechnews.co.uk/2012/03/12/samsung-ue55es8000-review/ that the voice and gesture is not very good. Does anyone know if this is true?
Yes, it might be what you expect in terms of interaction. It is certainly not the most efficient when you compare it with Apple’s Siri, but it works. Must appreciate Samsung for taking the initiative.
