Illumination Entertainment’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax topped this weekend’s Box Office. It grossed $70.2 million against a budget of $70 million over the three-day weekend and secured the top spot at the Box Office.
From the creative imagination of Dr Seuss, the CGI-3D feature follows an epic journey of the boy (voiced by Efron) hunting for the one thing that will enable him to win the heart of the girl (voiced by Swift) of his dreams. To accomplish his mission, he
must discover the story of The Lorax (voiced by DeVito), a cute grumpy creature who fights to protect his world.
The flick bagged $17.5 million from 3,729 theatres on its opening day on Friday. The Lorax then swiped in $31.1 million and $21.4 million on Saturday and Sunday respectively, summing up a total of $70,217, 070. It is by far the best opening of the year.
It’s also the eighth-highest debut ever for an animated movie and fourth-best for a non-sequel behind The Simpsons Movie ($74.04 million), The Incredibles ($70.47 million) and Finding Nemo ($70.25 million).
Review Aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, reports 57 per cent rotten rating, with an average score of 6.1 out of 10. The site’s general consensus states, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is cute and funny enough but the moral simplicity of the book gets lost with the zany
Hollywood production values.”
Project X came second this weekend with $21.05 million from 3,056 locations. Party movies have an awful track record but Project X had an amazing start.
Act of Valor fell to number three at the Box Office. After enjoying number one spot last week, the film dipped 45 per cent to $13.6 million.
Safe house stayed steady at fourth spot, dipping 32 per cent to $7.4 million. The movie had so far made an exceptional $108.4 million.
