The outgoing deputy chairman of Pakistan Senate, Mr. Jan Mohammad Jamali, in his farewell speech on Thursday, proposed direct elections for the appointment of members in country’s upper house.
“Direct elections for the Senate are imperative for better representation of the public [in the forum],” said the deputy chairman of Senate, in his farewell speech on Thursday.
Jan Mohammad Jamali also suggested that in the direct elections, a quota of 33% should be reserved for the women to ensure their due representation in both the houses.
Jamali, who took over as the deputy chairman of Senate six years ago, is due to retire next week. During the farewell speech, he conceded that during his six-year-long tenure, the upper house failed to address many issues.
“Senate made a number of decisions for the betterment of the people’s lives, but some areas remained unaddressed,” said the outgoing deputy chairman.
Senator Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, who has been re-elected for a term of another six years, said the decisions of the upper house will have far-reaching impact on the development of country and people’s prosperity.
“The current Senate was part of a Parliament that made historic decisions for legislation and furtherance of democracy,” said Hafeez Sheikh.
Other senators who addressed the last session of the upper house include Naeem Hussain Chattha, Raja Zafarul Haq, Muhammad Jahangir Badr, S M Zafar, Saeeda Iqbal, Maulana Gul Naseeb, Mir Mohabbat Khan Marri, Muhammad Ismail Buledi, Almas Parveen and

though jamali sahib is very late how ever i support the idea fully . there should be direct election for senate if the upperf house is to be true representative of AWAM. only a few seats for technocrates but no civil servants or retd generals. enough is enough. i will also add that the special seats for women shall be abolished. women coming through special seats are no representatives of pakistani woman folk. also the development fund of the paliamantarians shall be abolished a curse from junejo era which is spreading like cancer. member of parliament shall be legislators and that is all.
