One of the most meticulous Indian batsmen, Rahul Dravid has announced his retirement from the international cricket on Friday, March 9.
The 39-year-old batsman and former skipper, Dravid believes that it is the right time for him to move ahead and allow the young players to prove their mettle for his spot.
Dravid announced his retirement in the presence of president of Indian cricket board (BCCI), N. Srinivasan and former leg spinner, Anil Kumble at a conference in Bangalore.
The legendary Indian player played 164 test matches, where he scored 13,288 runs including 36 centuries and 63 half centuries. Similarly, he represented India in 344 ODIs where he accomplished 10,889 scores, which primarily consists of 12 centuries and 83
half centuries.
According to an article of Reuters, Dravid read from a prepared statement and confirmed what majority of the audience has guessed from the news conference that was scheduled on Thursday.
“I would like to announce my retirement from international and domestic first-class cricket,” said Dravid.
After the announcement of his retirement, Dravid claimed that he would now be able to spend more time with his family.
“It has been 16 years since I played my first test for India. I feel its time for me to move on. I have had a wonderful time but now its time for a new generation of young players to make their own history and to take the Indian cricket team even further,”
Dravid added.
Dravid’s retirement from the international cricket was a consequence of India’s 4-0 defeat in their last two away series in England and Australia.
He retired from the ODIs last year, when India faced a terrible loss from England and failed to accomplish victory in any match.
On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar, who has not succeeded in completing his 100th century so far, is also expected to announce retirement from the limited over’s format.
The 38-year-old Sachin is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket but with the continuity of his bad-patch, he is also considering the possibility of taking retirement from ODI format.
