Gunners made an epic comeback from a goal down to bag all three points in the second leg against Liverpool on March 3rd. The visitors nudged up a 2-1 victory at Anfield with the help from Robin Van Persie’s brace.
The Red Army dominated throughout the match and pulled out the victory to not only secure a fourth round spot at the Barclays Premier League and regained their poise.
The home side had a brilliant chance of taking the lead in the 18th minute when Suarez took the ball in and was fouled by the Polish keeper, Wojciech Szczesny. The Kops were awarded a controversial penalty but they squandered their chance of taking
the lead as Dirk Kyut missed it.
The Pole displayed superb defensive skills and not only saved the penalty but also blocked the shot by the Dutchman who fired again on the rebound.
Arsenal then suffered the first blow in the 23rd minute when Liverpool took the lead with the help from a dreadful own goal by Laurent Koscielny.
However, after just eight minutes, Arsenal captain Van Persie fired his 30th goal of the season and equalised the scores. Bacray Sagna put up a brilliant cross to create this goal.
The once Invincibles, Arsenal, confidently entered the second half and outclassed the Kops. In spite of seeking many chances, both sides failed to get the breakthrough.
The epic battle was poised at a knife edge in the 5-minute stoppage time but the visiting side was the one who outgunned their rivals. Three minutes to end of the match, the Dutchman showed his class once more and hammered a volley past Reina, ultimately
clinching the match.
Previously, Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup to Sunderland at the Stadium of light and suffered a disappointing 0-4 defeat against the Italian giants, AC Milan, at San Siro. However, the Gunners found their rhythm in their last match against Tottenham Hotspurs.
They came from behind and slaughtered the visitors with an exceptional 5-2 victory.
Arsenal’s boss, Arsene Wenger, was quoted in a post-match press conference, “It was vital for us to win the game. Liverpool had a very good first half and we were not in the game – what was flattering for us was to be 1-1 at half time. The second half was
much more level. We had some good chances as well, they had maybe one from Martin Kelly. But they had no clear-cut chances in the second half. They had to win the game, and we know that we have Van Persie who can deliver something special. Overall it was not
one of our best games, but we refused to give in and we played as well as we could. Our goalkeeper and centre forward made the difference.”
This success boosted confidence for Arsenal and brought smiles back on Gooners’ faces. They are looking forward to re-gain their pride at the Champions League and to avenge their first leg loss at San Siro.
