Bigger smartphones are a big problem for smaller hands – Part 1
Friday, March 9th, 2012 7:25:13 by Usman KhalidThe technology world has been running the hot streak for the last one decade and every day brings us more news on the evolution of personal and mobile computing. However, the evolution in the tech specs of the latter one is quite reciprocal to the former. As laptops, tablets and desktops for that matter are becoming slimmer and shorter (handy), the smartphones are becoming bigger and bigger.
In most cases and among several market demographics, bigger means better, in case of smartphones. However, this growing size of these devices has become a problem for people like me, who have smaller hands to handle the large footprint 4.3 to 5.3-inch mobile phones.
The current smartphone market ranges from smaller no-brainer cell phones to the crossbreeds of smartphone and tablet, the so-called phablets. However, most of the successful devices in the market still are the ones that have a smaller footprint and are easier to handle.
Mostly a cell phone or a smartphone is handled single-handedly, most of the time the SMSs are typed with a single thumb but the larger the screen becomes, the wider the keyboard expands, making it nearly impossible for a user to enter the characters with a single hand.
This however, is not to blame on the companies that make these smartphones that have screen that won’t quit. The reasons for a bigger screen are all justifiable and viable. The word mobile computing is not used in vein these days. Smartphones are the handhelds that manage most of the user’s computing on the go. Although the applications are limited by the hardware restrictions, these devices run apps from web browsers to dedicated applications like music, videos and Facebook to games.
Since the advent of high-definition videos and 1080p quality and multi-pixel cameras, the big screens make sense. The games are resolution restricted and only larger screens justify their application. However, the more these games evolve, the bigger the screens are going to be.
