However, many experts have criticized the Finnish for their thinking in rolling out such an astounding device on an operating system that is soon going down. Nokia itself announced that they will be pulling the plug on Symbian in the future. However, don’t let that deceive you as the company plans to get as many phones out on Symbian they can before it dies. Even today, there are more Symbian and Java phones in the market than any other operating system.

Jo Harlow, Nokia’s representative at MWC 2012 explained the reason why Nokia had to take the decision of launching the one-of-its-kind phone with an old-school operating system.

“This is really hard technology to accomplish on a phone,” Harlow said. “We have been working on this imaging technology for five years. And to get it into Windows Phone requires a lot of hardware and software adaption. We wanted to get this technology to market as soon as we could. That’s why we decided to commercialize it on Symbian first.”

Furthermore, Harlow hinted that the phone’s succession will surely be on Windows Phone or MeeGo. At the time of its creation, Windows Phone’s Mango update was a work in process, that limited Nokia’s innovation in terms of OS.

As for where the device will be sold, it seems that Nokia is focusing sales of 808 PureView globally with the exception of North America. According to the device’s home page, starting in May it will be available to customers in Europe and just about everywhere else around the world except the U.S. This makes sense given that Nokia hasn’t had much of a smartphone presence in the U.S. for years. Right now, the company is focusing attention on getting its Windows Phone devices established in the U.S.
