The Surprising Revelations of former Mehran Bank Chief Younis Habib

Better late than never, is a statement that perfectly suits what former chief of Mehran Bank, Younis Habib, disclosed about former President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and ex-army chief Mirza Aslam Beg.

In an exclusive interview following his presence in the Supreme Court of Pakistan before a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the man in the wheelchair known as Younis Habib, let the world know about the internal corruption going on during the early 1990’s.

He was called to appear before the court during the hearing of Asghar Khan’s petition against the use of public money by the country’s intelligence agency, the ISI, to influence the general elections at that time.

“I am the victim of that national interest and apologise for whatever I did to comply with the order of the former president. Now I put myself at the mercy of this august court,” Younis Habib submitted in his written statement.

Habib clearly stated that it was former President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and ex-COAS Mirza Aslam Beg that pressurised him through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in distributing huge amounts of money to politicians and agencies around the country for the purpose of derailing a democratic setup of the than Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed.

The amount is revealed to have been Rs 1.48 billion in total that was arranged partially by the now defunct Mehran bank along with Habib bank. Rs. 400 million was given to various politicians, including ex-Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif, to form the Islami Jamhoori Ittihad (IJI) to contest against the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and defeat them in an unfair manner against the will of the people.

The rest of the amount, stated by him, was given to the ISI and used by the military heads for their own corrupt purposes.

“GIK (Ghulam Ishaq Khan) asked me whatever you do it for the national cause. I was also told to make arrangement by hook or crook,” Habib said.

Another startling revelation by the former bank chief was that an ex-Bureaucrat, well known for his manipulating and fraudulent ways, Roedad Khan, pressurised him into lodging a complaint against the now Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, on baseless accusations which he refused to do.

These revelations should not be anything new to the Pakistani nation, but are rather things that we as the people have always known. Younis Habib is one of those people who have some guts and were able to come out in the open about the extreme corruption of our armed forces.

Pakistan’s current situation is the result of one thing only and that is the khaki’s always undermining the civilian government despite being subordinates to the democratic setup and doing the opposite to the will of the people through unfair means due to their incapability to face the facts otherwise.
