The Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of Pakistan has been provided with a new head recently by the Prime Minsiter of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. The new cheif of one of the most powerful institutions in the country will now be Lieutenant General
Zaheerul Islam who will be taking charge of his new appointment from March 18. The new chief is going to relive the retiring Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha of his duties as Pasha’s tenure reaches its close on the same date.
The news was broken to the public in the following statement that was received by the office of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani: "Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Lieutenant General Zaheerul Islam, Corps Commander Karachi,
as the new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence."
The now retiring chief of the ISI has already received two extensions after having reached the retirement age. Pasha has been serving as the chief of the ISI since the year 2008 while he reached the age of retirement in the year 2010.
After the announcement of the new chief of the ISI was made, the following statement was made by an official of the United States of America: "We would expect General Zahir to continue cooperation with the United States in our mutual fight against terrorism."
The US had not been on friendly terms with the current head of the ISI as Pasha had been accused of being responsible for backing militants in Afghanistan. Therefore, the change of chiefs in the ISI will come as a welcome step for the US.
Lieut. Gen. Islam is not unfamiliar with the workings of the ISI as he has already served as the deputy head of the ISI agency in the past. Not only that, Lieut. Gen. Islam has the approval of the head of Pakistan’s military General Asharf Pervez Kayhani.
Lieut. Gen. Islam comes from a family which has a sound military background as well. The credentials of the incoming head of the ISI prove him to have solid experiences in military matters as he has served in important army positions.
