Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik in quite an audacious move revealed details of the Kohistan carnage, saying the investigations into incident hint towards the involvement of certain banned organizations.

Malik also revealed that the probe into the incident was carried out by two separate teams. While heading a meeting in Gilgit-Baltistan, he claimed that five militants involved in Kohistan carnage have been arrested.

He further stated that a major operation against militants would be conducted soon. He assured that those involved in the massacre would be brought to justice at all costs.

The list of the identified people will be handed over to local jirgas who will hand over the culprits to the security forces, he added. He said nobody will be allowed to play with the law and order situation of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Malik also informed that the number of check posts will be increased to maintain the law and order situation in the area.

Rejecting the attribution of Kohistan incident to sectarianism, the minister said that some miscreant elements who are trying to destabilise Pakistan are behind such horrific incidents. He asserted that their nefarious designs will be baffled with the cooperation of the people.

The minister also announced a compensation of Rs2 million each for the bereaved families of those killed in the incident. At the same time, he announced handing over his authority to the chief minister and DG Scouts in an effort to bring peace and prosperity to the province, and to ban public rallies in the province in order to maintain peace.

Malik directed the interior secretary to contact the Afghan government, Guantanamo Bay authorities and Interpol to locate missing persons. This order was given out his meeting with Defence of Human Rights head Amina Masood Janjua.

He also gave his assurance for the release of 293 missing persons saying, Interpol will be contacted while Guantanamo Bay will also be checked with the help of Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman.

The minister said a list of the missing persons will also be sent to the Afghan interior ministry so that the jails in Afghanistan can be checked.
