iPad (2012 model): What’s hot and what’s not – Part 3
Saturday, March 10th, 2012 5:59:06 by Usman KhalidApple offers two basic versions of the iPad. One version has only a Wi-Fi radio for Internet connectivity. This lets people connect to the Net to check e-mail, surf the Web, stream video, play games, or whatever else they want to do with the device over a Wi-Fi connection. The other version of the iPad also has a carrier network radio so that users can connect to the Internet even when they aren’t in a Wi-Fi hotspot. Previous iPads had cellular 3G radios in them. For AT&T this was a GSM/HSPA radio and for Verizon Wireless is was a CDMA/EV-DO radio.
However, with 4G included in the 2012 model, the price of the device sky rockets. The WIFI-only versions are available at the same prices, $499 for 16 GB, $599 for 32 GB and $699 for 64 GB. The 4G LTE+WiFi versions start at $629 for 16 GB, $729 for 32 GB and $829 for 64 GB.
The new model surely comes with a number of new features and has wider range of choices but it will cost more, undoubtedly more than any other tablet in the market.
The 4G LTE is however, available in the US as Europe and Asia lack the 4G network; in Europe there are only a few regions where such technology has been deployed but due to the difference between the spectra of data transfer, both AT&T and Verizon version will not work outside the US.
In the US, if the iPad is being used where 4G is not available, it can still use the 3G network of AT&T or Verizon, depending on which carrier is supported.
Unfortunately, the carrier versions of the iPad are locked to specific carriers. This means that the AT&T version will only work on AT&T’s network and the Verizon version will work only on Verizon’s network. This is also true of other LTE devices.
