Andrew Santos’ John Carter is a 2012 science fiction film which is released on the second week of March. The movie stars Taylor Kitsch, famously known for Gambit in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as its lead character. It is based on A Princess of
Mars written by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
The director of this $250 million budgeted film has previously worked on Finding Nemo and Wall-E. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and produced by Jim Morris and Colin Wilson.
The 132-minute film follows the former military captain John Carter (starred by Kitsch), who is strangely transported to the lush planet, Mars, and becomes part of a conflict between the various nations of the planet. After escaping from the 12-foot tall
barbarians, he encounters Princess Dejah Thoris (starred by Lynn Collins) who is in desperate need of a saviour.
The film received a 50 per cent rotten rating at the review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 5.6 out of 10 from 168 critics. The site general consensus states, “While John Carter looks terrific and delivers its share of pulpy thrills,
it also suffers from uneven pacing and occasionally incomprehensible plotting and characterization.”
Metascore also gave it a rating of 51 out of 100 based on its 36 critics. However, IMDB awarded a better score of 6.8 out of 10 based on its 1,607 users.
Christopher Orr of The Atlantic was quoted, “The most indelible performance in the film is not, strictly speaking, a performance at all. Rather it is Woola, a six-legged Martian hound who rather resembles a cross between a bulldog and a fetal gila monster.”
Christian Science Monitor’s top critic, Peter Rainer, gave a C+ rating and said, “The reported $250 million price tag for John Carter gives one pause. I suppose one could argue that masterpieces have no price. Then again, John Carter is no masterpiece.”
All in all, the movie is a must watch for all genre especially at IMAX 3D.
