Leigh Nugent defends Ian Thorpe’s support for training

While defending the Swimming Australia’s aid for Ian Thorpe to prepare for the 2012 London Games, the Australian Swimming Head Coach, Leigh Nugent has expressed that any swimmer who would complaint against the support given to greatest Australian swimmer
of all times, would be an ungrateful Australian.

Some of the influential Australian swimmers have raised their voice against the high amount of aid that SA has given to Thorpe, Libby Trickett and Michael Klim. On the other hand, Nugent expressed that those swimmers who are troubled with this fact should
keep in mind that Thorpe and Trickett are unbelievable Australian swimmers.

It was unveiled that the trio of Thorpe, Trickett and Klim has received a significantly larger amount of sum for their preparations for the 2012 London Olympics than rest of Australian squad.

It was rumoured that Thorpe was given more than $100,000 for his training in Europe whereas the SA has denied all rumours, expressing that they no special treatment had been given to the trio. They claimed that the trio has been treated just like their fellow
swimmers.

The 29-year-old Thorpe, who announced retirement from competitive swimming in 2006, but made a comeback to his favourite sport in Feb 2011, has trained hard under the guidance of his coach Gennadi Touretski in Europe.

Thorpe intends to confirm his seat in the Australian team to London by proving his mettle in the event of 4*100m freestyle relay by securing a top six finish in the 100m event.

Nevertheless, many believed that the 200m freestyle would be an easy way for Thorpe to qualify for the Olympic Games. Furthermore, the Australian has not ruled out the possibility of participating in the 200m freestyle but there is only a little time left
as they Olympic trials are just two days away.

The Australian Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympic Games are starting from March 15. The trials will continue for eight days and will conclude on March 22 after the completion of Australian squad to London.

In addition, it would be interesting to see how Thorpe performs at the forthcoming tirals in Adelaide, this week.
