Pakistan likely to revise its list of banned terror groups

The government of Pakistan on Monday invited the terror groups in the country, including Taliban, to take part in peace talks and offered that their names would be removed from the list of banned organisations, if they closed down their militant wings in
the country.

There are more than 30 extremist groups banned by the government of Pakistan. Those also include al Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). But the Interior minister of Pakistan, Mr. Rehman Malik said on Monday that the government is
revising its list of banned militant groups and if the prescribed organisations assured them that they have abandoned extremism, then the representatives of government will meet them in the next few days to discuss a way forward.

“If the proscribed organisations assure us that they have closed down their militant wings and abandoned extremism, then we would like to meet them in next few days,” said Interior Minister Rehman Malik while speaking to the media reporters here in Islamabad
today.

“We have been contacted by several banned organisations that want to sit and talk. If they want to give up militancy we will talk to them as we are revising the list of proscribed organisations,” Malik added further.

The Pakistan interior minister remained non committal when asked about the names of the organisations government is considering to delist. He however, did reveal that government had “even offered the Taliban to give up militancy and join the federation”.
