Emissions to atmosphere
There will also be fugitive emission from leaking seals and flanges, and inadvertent spills. In emergency situations, the fluid will be discharged to the atmosphere through vents by the action bursting disc and relief valves.
This Practice can be carried because the emissions would largely consist of air and broth from fermentor. In case of large high temperature gas leakage, explosion or any other accident, emergency procedures will be followed. Regular check up and pressure/leak
testing of all the pipe work associated with the dryer section are included in the process start-up and shut down procedures.
The hot air exhausted from the dryer is partly used back in the heater and mixed with more air from the atmosphere which reduces the emissions. However a fraction of the hot air is purged to the atmosphere at near 100°C. Use
of this air to preheat the fresh air was not considered in this design because the amount of air bled from the system is very small in relation to the air flow required for the drying operation (Rose, 1971).
The purged air will be exhausted to atmosphere using a high duct. Cooling water may be used to reduce its temperature, and will be considered in the detailed design.
Noise
The two fans designed to be installed in this section of the plant are the main source of noise pollution. The opening of relief vales can also produce huge sounds but these last for only a short while and it can be controlled
by quick trouble shooting. Earth banks and screens of trees will be used around the fans to reduce noise creation (Perry, 1997). Ear protection will be provided and the area near to the fans will zoned to indicate that ear protection is mandatory in these
areas.
