Microsoft announces the Tango update to all Windows Phone handsets at Mobile World Congress 2012, Barcelona – Part 2
Monday, March 12th, 2012 5:41:28 by Usman KhalidAccording to MS spokesperson, these features along with a host of others will be available in the update.
- As other Web sites leaked previously, Tango will work on handsets with only 256 MB of RAM. It also will work with phones with the lower-cost Qualcomm 7X27a system-on-a-chip processor.
- The Tango update will be preloaded on the just-announced Nokia Lumia 610 and the ZTE Orbit, which are both due out in “the second quarter of 2012.”
- Microsoft is rolling out a technical preview of an updated Windows Phone software development kit (SDK) for Tango that includes the 256 MB emulator. A final version of the SDK is set to be available in March.
- Microsoft has identified a group constituting about five percent of the current 65,000 Windows Phone apps that won’t work on the lower-cost Windows Phone devices for which Tango is optimized. Microsoft is contacting these developers to see if they wish to made adjustments (like using less memory) to “fix” their apps. If they decide they don’t want to, they can opt out of allowing their apps to be installed on these phones. There also are some apps Microsoft has “automatically opted out” which will not perform well on these devices and will be designated as such in the marketplace.
So while it seems all Windows Phones are going to get Tango, it appears that there will be different access/experiences depending on what kind of Windows Phone you are using. From a Microsoft spokesperson:
“The new lower-cost devices (running Tango) will offer the same great core Windows Phone experiences, such as Live Tiles, People Hub, IE9 and access to more than 95% of the apps in our Marketplace. New devices built to the lower cost specification will disable some experiences like Local Scout, SkyDrive auto upload, and generic background agents, as well as reducing video support in order to ensure optimum performance of the core Windows Phone experiences.”
