With 54 Senators taking oath, the ruling Pakistan People’s Party has been emerged as single-largest party in the upper house of the parliament.

In quite an expected move, Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari, currently leader of the house has been replaced with Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek, while Senator Sabir Baloch was replaced with Jan Muhammad Jamali as the deputy chairman.

The special sitting of the upper house of the parliament was chaired by Presiding Officer Senator Afrasiab Khattak. He was nominated by President Asif Ali Zardari to administer oath to the newly elected members.

The Senators, after taking oath, were called to sign the roll of members for the Senate in alphabetic order. Senator Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh was the first to sign while Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa was the last member in the list.

The new senators will remain in the house for a six-year term. The 50 colleagues they are joining will step down in three years.

In the later move, the Presiding Officer will administer oath to newly elected Chairman. The new chairman will then take the seat and conduct the election for Deputy Chairman and administer him the oath.

The opposition in the Senate has decided not to contest for the posts of Chairman and Deputy Chairman. It was also decided to nominate Senator Ishaq Dar for the post of Leader of Opposition in the Senate.

It is quite clear that Nayyar Bukhari (Chairman) and Sabir Baloch (Deputy Chairman) will be elected unopposed.

After the recent Senate elections, PPP has emerged as a single-largest party in the House with 41 seats followed by PML-N with 14 seats and ANP with 12 seats and JUI-F and MQM with seven seats each, PML-Q five, BNP-A four and National Party and PML-F with one member each.

Rest of the members is stated to be independents in the Senate.

It is vital to mention here that with the power game taking its course, parties like Jamat-e-Islami, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, PKMAP and Awami Muslim League lost the ground and will have no representation in Senate.
