Quite recently, the scientists at Bar-Ilan University in Israel have discovered an anti-aging gene in human body, which can help extend the life span of mammals for up to two decades. Not only humans but other animals also have this gene that can fight the
aging effects.
In fact, the anti-aging gene provides sort of protection against the damage of age-related cells in all the mammals. The discovery has been made after a successful experiment on mice. According to the reports, a group of scientists examined the SIRT 6 gene
in mice and manipulated it by different ways. As a result, it extended the lifespan of laboratory mice up to fifteen per cent. (The SIRT genes are 80 per cent identical in humans and mice)
* The SIRT6 gene is part of a group of seven related pieces of DNA.
This is indeed great news for the whole world. People have always searched the remedies and treatments to protect them from aging effects. No body wants to get older but to live a long healthy life. Now after this discovery, the medical experts will try
to create a pill that would help older people to stay healthier for a long a time. However, this fountain of youth is still a mystery until the final experiment on humans.
However, there is the other side of the picture. According to results of the test, which was carried out by the scientists, the subject mice aged faster and developed curvature of spine and diabetes when the gene was removed. So this is a caution that an
attempt of giving someone a long life may also result in some severe consequences.
Speaking on this particular matter, Biologist Dr Haim Cohen said, "This gene is important to health and if you can tinker with it to get the body to make more of it then we could get people living longer.”
Likewise, Dr Cohen further explained "We can’t inject the gene so we are looking for a pill that can turn on the gene. If we can do that, then we might have found the fountain of youth."
However, he concluded that human trials are years away.
