The trio of Australian swimmers deserves assistance, says Leigh Nugent

The Australian Swimming head Coach, Leigh Nugent has claimed that the trio of Australian stars, Ian Thorpe, Libby Trickett and Michael Klim have earned their financial support from the Swimming Australia.

He also said that Thorpe and Trickett have the potential to do unbelievable and asserted that anyone who is upset with the arrangement of their preparations is an “ungrateful swimmer”.

It has been rumoured that the SA has provided Thorpe with the financial support of more than $100,000 for his preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games while SA has denied any payment of cash to the trio.

“Guys like Libby and Ian, who are historically just unbelievable producers for us, I think it’s probably the right thing to do to help these guys. They haven’t been paid to swim, they have just been helped in their training situation. These guys are multiple
gold medallists of recent times, and they are going to contribute if they make it [on to the Olympic team], to the performance of that team, and maybe help some of the other members win relay medals, and bring experience,” he said.

“I think you would be a pretty ungrateful person and a pretty ungrateful Australian to not assist our proven, best performers,” Nugent added.

The Australian Selection Trials for the 2012 London Games are just two days away and will start on March 15 in Adelaide. The 29-year-old Thorpe is looking forward to make a splash in the 100m freestyle at the upcoming trials. Thorpe will try to confirm his
place in the 4*100m freestyle Australian relay team for the 2012 London Games.

On the other hand, some of the Australian swimmers have decided to desert the Speedo Fastskin3 due to fitting issues. While responding to a question regarding the issue, Nugent said, “I would say most people at trials are going to stick with what they are
comfortable in.”

In addition, the Australian trials for Olympics will continue for eight consecutive days and will conclude on March 22 after the completion of Australian team to London.
