Three climbers go missing on Gasherbrum-1 as Search and Rescue operations continue with the help of Pak Army
Three climbers from the international team have gone missing on the Gasherbum-1, the third highest mountain in Pakistan, surging to a colossal 8,068 meters. Gerfried Goschl, the legendary Austrian mountaineer who was leading the team of assorted mountaineers
from Spain, Switzerland and Pakistan, has not contacted the Base Camp since Friday, March 9.
The team was pitched to scale the mighty mountain for the first time in winters and were following a new route from the south side, reported by
www.pakistan-explorer.com.
Help has been sought by the Pakistan military choppers and the Army Aviation has designated two high-altitude choppers for the Search and Rescue SAR operation but the flights have not been conducted in the face of raging snow storms.
Two other mountaineers are the Swiss Cedric Hahlen and the Pakistani Nisar Hussain. Hussain is arguably one of the best climber in the country and although barely known in his home country, he is a legendary mountaineer in the climbing circles worldwide.
Being the first Pakistani to summit all five 8000ers, Hussain has been to the top of G-1 several times, triggering a hope that the team members must be safe in a bivouac guided by Hussain.
The young Hunzain works as a High Altitude Porter (HAP) but also climbs for his passion.
The incident has been thoroughly covered by the team of designated correspondents working for www.pakistan-explorer.com and even after 100 hours have passed, the families and friends are still hoping for a miracle.
Temperatures above 7000metres are in the range of -50 Celsius while the raging winds are expected somewhere around 150 km/h.
The team was last spotted 300meters short of the peak on Friday by one of the successful Polish team members who summated the peak on March 9. There has been no radio or Sat-Phone contact of the team members since then.
