Nupur Mehta: I have no connection with the match-fixing
Tuesday, March 13th, 2012 11:28:38 by Imran Shaukat KhanBollywood actress, Nupur Mehta, who was a part of the credited cast in Hindi movie ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’, recently landed in the middle of a controversy after a UK newspaper accused her of being involved in a match fixing ring. The newspaper claimed that Mehta’s role was to seduce the players from different countries. However, the actor, in a press conference on Monday, while rejecting all reports said that she will take legal actions.
Later on, the unsubstantiated ‘The Sunday Times’ report also claimed that the last year’s World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan at Mohali was fixed and the bookmakers used a Bollywood actress as a honey-trap to seduce the players.
The newspaper showcased a picture a Nupur Mehta’s 2005 film ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’ as well, which has upset the actress a lot. Mehta told the CNN-IBN that apart from the news her picture was also published without her permission.
She said, “It was a complete shock. I had no relation to this. The allegations are baseless and for demeaning my personality”
“I have no connection with the match-fixing episode that has been linked to me. I am just a cricket fan. I am shocked that a newspaper like The Sunday Times of London has used my picture this way. It is not right,” Nupur told Mail Today.
“They blurred my face in the snapshot and used it without my knowledge or permission. Even if they were using my picture for representative purpose, they did not mention as much,” she said.
This news has left many in the country flabbergasted since there were already many noises in the air about the match.
“Attractive girls are the ideal choice to cosy up to players and to persuade them to work for bookmakers,” an unnamed bookie was quoted saying. “Players are always surrounded by fans and groupies so nobody suspects a thing when they walk in and out of players’ hotel bedrooms.”
The news further claimed that tens of thousands of pounds were offered to the players during the World Cup semi-final last year.
