When this physical format came to the CD-ROM, Microsoft took the power that characterized its Encarta encyclopaedia. Its first edition came in 1993, according to Wikipedia. It was a revolution, as it included videos, interactive
graphics, Internet links and updates about progress and traditional paper encyclopaedias could not give.
In Spain, the alternative to Microsoft’s encyclopaedia called Micronet, more focused on Spanish and Latin American content.
Encarta’s success was based especially on household consumption, which saw in this collection of CDs which is a handy aid for study purpose of the children. However, Microsoft killed the Encarta technology despite its updates and
removed it from the Google search engine.
In June 2009, Microsoft failed to edit the encyclopaedia on CD and months later they were also forced to leave the online business.
Micronet, meanwhile, has survived. "We still sell a few hundred copies on CD, which is updated annually." However, in the same CDs the users are given away free one year
online subscription. "It is our customers who have started entering the online encyclopaedia, Enciclonet, where updates are constant." Jose Maria Martin, director of Marketing was quoted as saying.
She added: "We’re adapting to technological advances. We now offer customers the ability to create internal contents to suit you. Fifty people work in the Micronet, although not engaged in the encyclopaedia, once established, requires
less effort to add content.”
The Internet service subscription costs 21.58 Euros to register to the encyclopaedia. Schools, libraries and some other general regions are the main customers for this service.
