PTI to adopt US-style party’s election process

In quite a distinctive way, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to adopt US style party’s election process, believing the new initiative will strengthen the democratic process in the country.

The PTI, in a US-style nomination and ticket-holding process, will introduce caucuses on district level throughout the country, which in return will elect a local party leader who will contest elections on provincial and national levels.

The local caucuses or electoral colleges, according to the party’s new constitution, will comprise four million basic members from the length and breadth of the country. The members of the caucuses, in the next step, will send a candidate for the national and provincial assembly.

According to the PTI Information Secretary Andleeb Abbas, the party presently has some 800,000 basic members. She observed, “No matter how high-profile a politician is, the ticket is not guaranteed unless the local caucus awards him the nomination”.

She further stated that members of these caucuses will be picked during a membership drive in every union council. The central executive committee of the party is currently debating the much-awaited party’s constitution, which will be made public soon, she added.

The PTI is also going to launch the Insaf Professional Forum on March 19, in Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab. This body will be comprised top professionals from the province and will work as an advisory board on technical matters confronting the party policy.

Additionally, the party’s chairman, Imran Khan will launch a public contact campaign in South Punjab for three days. The cricket-turned politician in the informative campaign will address public rallies in different cities including Bahawalnagar, Muzzaffargarh, Khanewal and Mailsi.

The Information Secretary said Imran Khan will address a public gathering in Sialkot, on March 23 while the party is also mulling to hold a grand rally in Abbottabad, the garrison city of Pakistan.

The PTI, during the rally, will announce its policy on the creation of Hazara province, the demand of the local people.

In the next phase, the PTI’s bandwagon will leave for Quetta, for what is billed to be biggest public rally, hitherto.

A committee headed by PTI Balochistan President Qasim Suri is working to finalize the arrangements. According to the reports, the captain is expected to attract dissident Baloch nationalist leaders to the public gathering.
