How To: What is the difference between a hard drive and a solid-state drive and how to replace them? – Part 4
Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 5:33:42 by Usman KhalidThere are chips used in SSDs akin to flash drives that store the data at fixed positions. The circuit, for a layman, is a grid of lines in longitude and latitude. Every intersection has a spot to store an address and data. The index stores the data address just like older versions and upon the command the data from the mentioned address is picked up for working.
The difference in speeds of mechanical components and electrical circuits actually make the difference. However, the bigger the grid, multiple is the cost of the device.
The 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD, for example, costs around $500, whereas the 500GB Seagate Momentus XT, one of the most expensive hybrid laptop hard drives, costs just $100. The Seagate Barracuda XT offers 3TB of storage space and costs only $230. On top of that, SSDs are very limited in terms of storage space, with the top drives capping at around 500GB (these cost close to $2,000).
Now I am going explain procedure of how to replace the hard drive out of your laptop or desktop with an SSD.
For desktops, the physical steps are comparatively simpler than laptops. However, the software back-up and data transfer are the same for both.
There are four things that needed in the following process. Of course, a solid-state drive is required in order to change the current storage component, a SATA to USB converter and a back-up/data transfer program are required. Finally, you need a screw driver, in most cases a Phillips-head screw driver would suffice.
NOTE: All of this can only happen on a Windows PC with versions XP, Vista or 7.
