The five-time Olympic champion, Ian Thorpe is confident about his making the team in the 100m and 200m freestyle disciplines at the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships in South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
The 29-year-old Thorpe, who retired from competitive swimming in 2006, has trained hard for the 100m freestyle in his bid to qualify for the forthcoming 2012 London Games. Thorpe, who returned to aggressive sport after five years of retirement, will compete
in the 200m freestyle on Friday, March 16 while his 100m event is scheduled on Sunday, March 18.
“There will be a tremendous sense of relief when it happens and I’ll be equally as excited about going to an Olympics again, so that’s what I have to look forward to,” Thorpe said.
“What I said is that I have come to terms with what this is, what could happen, that I more than likely could fail. But once you can kind of accept that, you can let go and be able to do what’s necessary to be able to prepare and to be able to train without
that level of fear in what you’re trying to accomplish. I’m probably as confident as I have been in my preparation. I’m happy with how I’ve trained recently and I’m looking forward to the competition. But is he confident he can do it? ”I’m as confident as
I should be,” Thorpe explained.
The comeback king will experience strong competition from the current world champion, James Magnussen and former world champion, Eamon Sullivan in the 100m freestyle event. The 100m event is one of the big swims of the Australian nationals, which started
on March 15 in Adelaide.
Nevertheless, only two days are left to reveal the mystery of Thorpe’s qualification. The Australian is pretty confident of making the Australian team and he has ignored all criticism regarding his pedestrian 100m freestyle at the Zurich International Meet
in February.
Furthermore, it would be interesting to see how Thorpe’s perform in the 200m freestyle as the event will depict his performance in the 100m discipline.
