Backed by all 24 opposition members, including seven from Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Ishaq Dar has been declare new opposition leader in the Senate, the Upper House of Parliament.

Senator Dar submitted an application in office of the Chairman Senate signed by 17 senators, pleading to be notified as opposition leader. No other member submitted application for the slot.

Chairman Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari issued the notification soon after few hours, appointing Ishaq Dar as new leader of opposition. It was the same slot to which he was denied some nine months back.

The PML-N, after March 2 Senate elections, has 14 members in the upper house of Parliament while three independent senators also signed the application to support Dar for the slot of opposition leader.

The PML-N’s senators Hamza, Kamran Michael, Zafarullah Khan, Raja Zafar ul Haq, Mushahidullah, Najma Hamid, Nuzhat Sadiq, Pervaiz Rashid, Sajid Mir, Zafar Ali Shah, Zulfiqar Khosa, Nisar Muhammad signed the application.

Three independent senators who rendered their support to Senator Dar are Mir Hasil Bazenjo and Humayun Mandhokhel and Mohsin Leghari.

On the other hand, JUI-F has also written a letter to the chairman senate, showing their support to Dar. JUI-F Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri had already vacated the chamber of the opposition leader.

The numbers of PML-N in the Senate have been increased from 7 to 14 after March 2 polls while seats of JUI-F were reduced from 12 to 7. Fresh statistics have made Dar able to get the top opposition slot which he could not get in June lost years despite having support of 24 senators.

While speaking to the media, Dar expressed thanks to the JUI-F for supporting him as a unanimous candidate for the opposition leader’s post and now he would be heading a joint opposition in the upper house of the parliament.

Besides the JUI-F senators, Dar said that Hasil Bizenjo of the National Party and two independent candidates — Mohsin Leghari and Humayun Mandokhel — had supported him as the opposition leader.

The PML-N now possesses the offices of the opposition leader in both the houses of the parliament as party stalwart Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan is the opposition leader in the National Assembly (NA).
