Misbah-ul-Haq responds to ‘haters’ via Twitter – Part 1: background
Friday, March 16th, 2012 11:00:20 by Musa AfridiPakistan’s cricket team captain has taken to social networking to hit back at his critics following a fine display against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup.
Misbah-ul-Haq shares a love hate relationship with the fans of Pakistan cricket. His assured and steady performances form the backbone of the team’s innings and are a vital asset when the batting line-up begins to collapse.
However, he has had his critics over the years as many believe that the skipper is more concerned with batting out the 50 overs in an ODI than scoring runs. His strike rate over the past few matches seems to provide ample evidence to that claim.
At the same time, Misbah has led the country to countless victories, using the same approach, yet for every match he has won, the people remember him for the matches he cost his side.
Yet, if one was to look at the importance of the matches lost, one can see the reasons for dissent and the instant cries for blood.
Misbah was on the crease in the first ever T20 World Cup final against bitter rivals India. After forging a potentially match winning partnership with Sohail Tanveer, Misbah needed to score a handful of runs in the last over to snatch victory from the jaws
of defeat.
Instead, his attempt at a cheeky sweep sent the ball straight into the arms of an Indian fielder resulting in one of the most agonising moments any Pakistani cricket supporter has had to endure.
On another occasion, this time in the semi-final of the World Cup, Misbah’s refusal to get runs on the board meant that Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the final of the competition disappeared in the most painful of fashions.
Misbah, however, is not one to let matters such as this get to him and he remains consistent in his approach to the game, something that has paid off in the test match format of the game.
