Amir Khan: Boxing in Britain has not been the best

Saturday, March 17th, 2012 12:49:59 by

Former WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Champion, Amir Khan, has shared his thoughts with the media over the ugly brawl between Dereck Chisora and David Haye, which occurred last month in the post-fight press conference of Chisora’s world heavyweight title defeat to Vitali Klitschko in Munich.

The 25-year-old Bolton’s finest, who is more commonly known as King Khan, has insisted that Chisora and Haye have given a huge blow to the British boxing’s image, which is certainly not good.

Khan, who holds a record of winning 26 of his 28 professional fights, including 18 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, is a good friend of both Haye and Chisora. Therefore, he was a bit reluctant while criticising them at the press conference, which was held yesterday to launch his rematch with Lamont Peterson. However, the pugilist still admitted the fight has portrayed a good image of British boxing in front of the world.

“Boxing in Britain has not been the best, especially with what happened between David and Chisora,” Khan said.

“It’s tough because I know both fighters well and they have been cool with me, but it just looked bad. We just don’t need that in boxing.”

Khan lost to titles to Lamont ‘the Havoc’ Peterson on December 10 last year in a highly controversial bout yet the Britain says he respects Peterson outside the ring because he is a professional.

“Me and Lamont are two professional fighters who respect each other outside the ring,” said Khan.

He said, “We have been in this position where we have been head to head and everything has been fine. There haven’t been any punches thrown or anything and you will never see me getting in to things like that.

“I respect sport and I respect boxing fans.”

Well, all said and done, Chisora and Haye’s fight in front of the world’s media has certainly put a lot of bad effect on the boxing’s image and this is a reason why Chisora, who is a former British Champion, has been handed with an indefinite ban by the World Boxing Champion (WBC).
