The prolonged mystery of the Australian comeback king, Ian Thorpe has ended on Sunday morning, as he failed to make his way into the Australian squad to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Thorpe competed in the 100m and 200m freestyle at the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships in Adelaide, which acts as the Australian Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 29-year-old Australian, who returned to competitive swimming in February 2011 after five years of retirement, tried really hard to ensure his place in the 4*100m freestyle and 4*200m freestyle relay teams but failed to secure a top six finish in both
events.
“I hadn’t thought about it (his future) very much because I had planned to be swimming on in London, but I think now I’ll probably take a few days off and enjoy the competition and then sit down with a few people, (national coach) Leigh Nugent and my coach
Gennadi (Touretski) and work out what is next, work out what the next preparation will be and what competition will be next,” he said.
“When I started this I wanted to get back in the pool, I wanted to race and I wanted to go to the Olympics. I still want to do all of those things. Unfortunately I have missed out on a huge goal here, but the desire is still there,” Thorpe added.
On the other hand, the 29-yer old has not ruled out the possibility of competing for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
While expressing his views, when asked if he had any regrets, Thorpe added, “No. Overall, no.”
“It’s tough. It’s hard coming to this competition and really failing in what I set out to do. I’m disappointed that I really haven’t been able to race in a way that’s reflective of the hard work that I’ve done, but I am glad I was willing to put myself out
there,” said Thorpe.
The Australian championships will continue for five more days and will conclude on March 22 after the conclusion of all listed events.
