Accomplishments listed by President Asif Ali Zardari
Monday, March 19th, 2012 12:42:00 by Faisal FarooqLike other governments in the past, the incumbent has also faced threats to its survival, but President Asif Ali Zardari achieved a great accomplishment by delivering record 5th address to the parliament.
Both real and connoted failures of governance could have been used as justifications to dislodge the course of democracy, but some logical decisions by political parties dismissed the efforts.
The incumbent through a combination of astute politics, an assertion of its own role vis-à-vis other state institutions and modifications in the internal calculations of those institutions, managed to go on for term-completion.
It is no mean achievement if we consider it in the context of this country’s failed attempts at sustained democracy.
However, the reality of having survived is not adequate to justify the optimism of President Asif Ali Zardari’s evaluation of where the country stands today.
He counted the administration’s actual and fictional accomplishments as head of the party, rather than a head of the state.
He paid little attention to deficiencies; he presented a picture of the incumbent that has taken giant steps in dealing the energy problem, tackling combativeness and bettering key economic indicators.
Considering the quality of people’s day-to-day lives, it is safe to say that most Pakistanis would disagree the accomplishments. We should consider challenges posed by the previous administration’s decisions, the floods and the global recession.
However, a denial to move beyond these to adequately admit the asperity of Pakistan’s continuing challenges, particularly on the economic, security and foreign-affairs fronts, only further battered trust in the current leadership’s aptitude, or desire, to govern efficiently.
President Zardari did not hinted any way forward of what the government will execute in its last parliamentary year to create structural reform or improve the lives of masses. He delivered what was entirely predictable.
The most positive accomplishment is that the incumbent has brought us to a place where Pakistanis will certainly cast their next vote under a civilian dispensation, in the upcoming general elections.
Following the move, it is expected that people will bring forward candid and accountable administrations after the free and fair elections.

PPP is the most corrupt government. It has only made deals to stay in power
