World champion, James Magnussen stunned the aquatic world with his blistering performance on fifth day of the 2012 Energy Australia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide.
Magnussen is on a verge of improving the world record of 100m freestyle, set by Cesar Cielo of Brazil, who clocked 46.91 seconds at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Magnussen gave no chance to his competitors to fight back and sprinted his way towards the finishing wall for gold medal by posting 47.10 seconds. He was followed by James Roberts, who remained two strokes behind and clinched silver medal of the discipline
with the timing of 47.63 seconds.
Similarly, Matt Targett earned bronze medal of the discipline as he clocked a time of 48.32 seconds. The fourth position of the discipline was secured by former Australian champion, Eamon Sullivan, who reported 48.53 seconds.
“I executed everything pretty close to the way I wanted to, [and was] not quite good enough but I’d definitely give that world record another crack. I backed myself tonight and I really went after it and I really felt it in that last 10 metres,” said Magnussen.
“I feel pretty confident after that swim, but I’m certainly not going to rest on my laurels and I’m going to do everything in my power to break that world record because I do want to be considered the fastest man in history,” he added.
While talking about his opponents, Magnussen said, “I’m sure they (my rivals) will have a few sleepless nights. I think it just keeps them second-guessing their own preparations and keeps them chasing me. While ever I can just keep raising that benchmark,
it’s just going to be harder and harder for them to have any confidence going into the Olympics.”
He was also contented with the wonderful efforts of Roberts in the 100m discipline, expressing that this would help them a lot in the 4*100m freestyle relay at the 2012 London Games.
Furthermore, the Australian has also won the preliminary rounds of 50m freestyle and is pretty confident that he will achieve the same in single lap event.
