Memo drama is in full swing

The infamous memogate saga declines to die as everyday a new twist comes into the surface and makes it more notorious.

Rejecting application of Hussain Haqqani, who offered to give his testimony via video link from London, the judicial commission directed him to appear in person as per the terms of his departure from the country.

It is not hard to understand Haqqani’s reasons for offering to testify via video link, he cannot really be enjoying the circus that will be his comeback to the country and his appearance before the commission again.

Keeping aside the reasons, anything that could expedite the conclusion of the memo drama ought to be caught as keenly as possible. The possibility that Haqqani is in severe legal danger has almost disappeared after the performance that Mansoor Ijaz has put in as the star witness.

The US businessman’s predilection for making an exorbitant allegation one day and then quietly suggesting he isn’t sure of its actuality the next day has ragged his reliability to the point of oblivion.

In his latest claim, Ijaz said Hussain Haqqani was dreaming of becoming president of the country with the help of United States.

Although many things are possible in the country, much outlandishness has been recorded in the history of Pakistan, the possibility of Haqqani of becoming president, certainly be regarded as one of the more ludicrous theories.

He may be a political chameleon and has always known how to land on his feet, but some political efforts are definitely beyond the craftiest of minds.

No matter how sloppy the evidence standard employed, we have to wait another week for Haqqani’s testimony denying that which hasn’t really been established against him in the first place.

Maybe it is obliging to remember the opportunity cost of the judicial commission hearings. At the time when more serious work of managing high courts burdened by countless administrative disorders has been digressed, as the three serving chief justices of high courts are working long hours in squirming with marginal silly allegations and counter-allegations in Islamabad.

However, the Supreme Court is not looking in mood to issue fresh directives to the judicial commission, tasked to investigate the inglorious memogate issue, to finish the job as quickly as possible.
