Salman Butt lured me into fixing; says Muhammad Amir
Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 9:40:48 by Faisal FarooqApparently for the first time, disgraced Pakistani pacer, Mohammad Amir confessed his guilt in the spot-fixing scandal, apologizing to the nation for his action.
In quite an innocent way, he claimed that former captain Salman Butt had betrayed their friendship by involving him in the spot-fixing scandal. While speaking in detail to former England captain, Mike Atherton in an interview to Sky Sports Amir explained his role in the spot-fixing scandal.
Speaking about Salman Butt, Amir observed, “He used to call me innocent one. Like how an elder brother would speak to a younger one”.
The tainted-Pakistani bowler said that he was not involved in the scandal but he was trapped in the scene by former Pakistani opening batsmen and captain, Salman Butt. He claimed that it was Butt along with bookie Mazhar Majeed who pressurized him to throw a no-ball in the game.
Muhammad Amir, who is banned for five years, said that Butt and Majeed had cheated him and told him that they had proofs regarding his talks with a businessman named Ali whom he met in Dubai.
He observed, “Ali met me in Dubai and claimed that he is a friend of Salman Butt and asked me to give my account number. Upon which, he said he gave his number to Ali to find out why he was asking for his number.
In quite a childlike tone, the pacer further said that although he received 1500 from Majeed but never meant to use that amount as he felt that that it was an offense to use such amount. He asserted, “I feel very shame on my act and apologise for my actions from Pakistan nation and cricket lovers whom I let down due to my actions”.
In his view, he was not mature enough when he was put-upon by Majeed and Butt. He, however, advised the youngsters to avoid taking any gifts and money from strangers.
Amir, the highly-rated 19-year-old pacer, was released from jail last month after serving half of a six-month sentence for his part in the scandal during the Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan in 2010.
He along with teammates, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif was trialed in the England’s court.
