Ambassador of United States of America to Pakistan, Cameron Munter wants to normalize relations between Pakistan and the US. He is of the opinion that the two countries should look forwards and the events of the last couple of years must be forgotten.
The US decided to invade Afghanistan in 2001 after the attack on the World Trade Centre and Pakistan became a front-line ally in the war against terror. Pakistan has lost more than 40 thousand lives in this war and as a result of that, its economy has also
suffered big time.
However, the Pak-US relations have gone through a massive downfall since 2009 as a sequence of events has led to bitterness between the two nations. The US has been demanding Pakistan to take a military action in North Waziristan, where the US feels that
the Taliban have been given ‘safe heavens’.
On top of that, the Raymond Davis issue and the Osama Bin Laden fiasco created a lot of distrust between the allies. Drone Attacks have also been a source of hatred for the US policies in Pakistan.
However, the brutal killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers at the Salala Check-Post proved to be detrimental in Pakistan’s foreign policy as the South Asian country stopped the NATO supplies from Pakistan and demanded an unconditional apology.
Munter believes that the two countries must get rid of their differences and it is about time that Pakistan and the US decide to take their relations forward. He claimed once again that the attack on the Salala Check-Post was not deliberate.
"We would show respect to Pakistan and take the Parliament’s recommendations seriously. We want to work together as we have common concerns. We need to have a realistic discussion and move forward to reset our ties. The Salala incident on November 26 last
year was an accident, and we want to make sure it never happens again," he emphasized.
The ambassador admitted and appreciated Pakistan’s role in the war against terror.
Munter added, "We were not impatient. Increasingly in the US there is respect for Pakistan’s sacrifices as it lost thousands of civilians and around 3,000 soldiers and policemen fighting those who want to harm both the US and Pakistan."
