100m freestyle world champion, James Magnussen, who recently won gold medal of the 100m freestyle at the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide, is suffering from chest infection.
The 20-year-old Magnussen clocked a blistering 47.10 seconds in the 100m freestyle playoff and alarmed his opponents all over the world while he also made his way through to the finals as top contender for gold medal in the 50m freestyle.
Magnussen won gold medal of the 100m freestyle at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships and has repeatedly claim his desire of achieving the same at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
“Give me straight preparation and it could get interesting. He’s pretty crook, he’s been crook for nine or 10 days … up to about three nights ago, and for a few nights in a row, he was up coughing and producing hefty and ugly phlegm. He was having his chest
bashed around by the physios and having a little bit of trouble breathing and coughing up a bit of rubbish on the table as well,” said Magnussen’s coach, Brant Best.
“I have a lot of faith in him. He ‘s able to stand up and fight under any circumstances and I knew that he was going to be able to get up there and have a good crack at it. It’s more of a mental thing that he just doesn’t lose faith in himself. He can do
it no matter what. It’s a faith and a strength of character and the confidence that amazes me,” he added.
On the other hand, the tired Australian specialist, Magnussen did not his illness to halt his way and remained unmatchable in his disciplines. Magnussen has expressed his desire of lowering the world mark of 46.91 seconds at the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic
Games.
The record was made by Cesar Cielo at the 2009 Rome World Championships, who was wearing now banned polyurethane suits while Magnussen’s 47.10 seconds effort is the fastest by any swimmer in a textile suit.
