PM Gilani says his resignation is not a routine matter
Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 6:23:30 by Faisal FarooqPrime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, whose tone has been altered after Senate elections, on Wednesday said a shuffle in the cabinet is a routine matter but his resignation is not.
While speaking to the media, apparently the defiance premier said parliament was a responsible institution and whatever decision it takes will in the larger interests of the nation.
While referring to the contempt of court case against him, he observed, “The parliament is the people’s mandate. It is not an easy task to satisfy every single person”.
While replying to a question about Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC)’s announcement to encircle the parliament if it resumed the NATO supply line, the primer minister said that the supplies was neither blocked nor will be restarted on their advice.
Commenting on reservations uttered by Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) over the revised foreign policy, Gilani said that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) was not made by him.
He clarified that the body was formed by the speaker and all parties including the party of Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had their representation in the committee.
He asserted, “Whoever has reservations would be given ample opportunity to express their point of view. This point of view is of the parliamentary committee, not of an exclusive government party”.
The premier was questioned by a journalist about his earlier statement where Gilani termed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry his close friend. He asked the prime minister about any out-of-court settlement with his friend.
Upon which, the defiance premier said that even the idea of an out-of-court agreement is contempt of court.
Gilani explained, “Once a friend, always a friend. His (chief justice’s) two friends – one who was a part of his restoration and the other who was a part of the lawyers’ movement – both are present in the court in the case”.
He was assured there was not threat to democracy in the presence of vibrant media, independent judiciary and parliament in the country.
About next general elections, Gilani said that the decision would be taken after consultation with allied parties.
