Parliament will decide the fate of NATO supplies – Sherry Rehman

Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, Sherry Rehman has said that the Parliament will decide about the future of NATO supplies from Pakistan and the country will not take any international pressure regarding this issue.

NATO supplies were halted after the Salala Check-Post incident, where 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed. It was followed by massive protests all around the country and created a feeling of hatred among the masses for the NATO and the ISAF forces.

However, there are some speculations recently that the Government of Pakistan is now ready to reopen the NATO supplies from the country. However, some of the political parties like Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf and Jamaat e Islami have threatened for massive
protests in case the government allows the NATO supplies to go through from Pakistan once again.

Sherry, who is currently in Pakistan, said that the ball is in the court of the National Assembly and they will decide the fate of NATO supplies.

“Decision regarding the restoration of NATO supplies would be taken by Parliament adding that the decision would be based on National interest,” she said.

On the other hand, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar has expressed that it is a very complicated issue and the government will take a decision according to the will of the nation.

Rabbani said, "I don’t think it is a matter of grievance as much as it is about a matter of building a type of partnership which is lasting, which has the ownership of the people of Pakistan, and of course the parliament of Pakistan.”

The Foreign Minister agreed that the Salala incident is proving to be a thorn between Pakistan’s relations with NATO.

“This was really the brink of continuing with a relationship or a partnership which was increasingly being seen in Pakistan not to be working for Pakistan," she added.

The Government of Pakistan and the Army took a principle stance after the Salala incident and now they should make sure that such an incident does not takes place again in future, if Pakistan decides to reopen the NATO supplies. The world powers must realize
that they cannot violate the sovereignty of an independent state.
