The Australian 100m freestyle veteran, James Magnussen is confident that his rivals are stunned with his alarming pace and he will dominate the 100m freestyle at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
Magnussen, who became the national champion of 100m event last year and subsequently clinched gold medal of the 100m discipline at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, is not only gunning for the gold medal at the forthcoming Olympics but he also aims for improving the world record.
He acquired gold medal of the 100m discipline by posting a time of 47.10 seconds, fastest by any swimmer in the textile suits.
“I feel pretty confident after that swim, but I’m certainly not going to rest on my laurels and I’m going to do everything in my power to break that world record because I do want to be considered the fastest man in history,” Magnussen said.
“I executed everything pretty close to the way I wanted to, [and was] not quite good enough [last night] but I’d definitely give that world record another crack. I backed myself tonight and I really went after it and I really felt it in that last 10 metres,” he added.
He was followed by Roberts, who finished second with the timing of 47.63 seconds. While praising his strongest competitor James Roberts, Magnussen said, “I am actually really happy for him to do that. We’ve been racing each other for a long time and hopefully now we’ll both be in London together in that relay team.”
After his gold finish, he tweeted that, “Australia just resembled the best 4×100 ever. No one will get close. Forget guitars these boys will bring home the gold and create history.”
Magnussen’s dazzling performance in the 100m discipline is quite alarming for his challengers and he has left no secret about his prime target at the Olympic Games, which is lowering the world record.
With just few months left in the beginning of battle royal, it would be interesting to see if Magnussen succeeds in accomplishing his goal or he fails to overpower ruthless efforts of defending champion, Cesar Cielo.
