PM Gilani hails Zero Hunger Action Plan
Friday, March 23rd, 2012 4:37:10 by Asma RafiquePrime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday hailed the just unveiled Pakistan’s first ever Zero Hunger Action Plan drafted by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.
While speaking to the media at the concluding session of the “National Workshop on Food Security in Pakistan” at a local hotel, Gilani said that this Plan was an outcome of a long process of deliberations that concluded into a 5-day workshop in which experts from all over the Pakistan as well as from abroad were invited to sit together and share their expertise and experiences.
Elaborating the plan, the PM said it comprises of two distinct stages of the sitting PPP government.
“During the first three and a half years, our conscious attention was on development of agriculture and livestock, and by the grace of Allah, we have achieved historic success,” said Gilani.
“Now the time is right to put all the pieces together and move up from agriculture and livestock to Food Security and Zero Hunger. In this quest, two landmark decisions by this government have changed the very dynamics of decision-making and governance in the country. These landmark decisions are 7th NFC Award and the 18th Amendment,” he added further.
Replying a query regarding wheat prices, the Prime Minister said that when he took over the house in 2008, he had doubled wheat prices which were further raised to Rs1,050/40 kg. This gave the farmers and incentive to increase the crop production and bring surplus wheat in the country. He further added that they are mulling over expanding the analogy to other crops as well.
The PM further said that we must not forget rice. “As our major export commodity, rice is fetching higher prices due to quality improvement. We are also opening up high-end markets such as US and Japan for our horticulture crops like mango and citrus fruits and beginning to make our presence felt in the halal meat export market as well,” he added.
