Wonders of World: Christ the Redeemer in Brazil

It is located at top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As it is a symbol of Christianity, this statue has become the icon of Rio de Janeiro. This sculpture is 710 meters long in its height. This is the liveliest symbol of the city.
It is world’s 5th largest statue in this world. Christ the Redeemer has been built between the years 1926 and 1931 with the help of the funds which were raised from the people. This statue was inaugurated on 21st October 1931 by Lady Aparecida. There are 222 steps to reach at the top of the statue.
After the construction of this statue, there was also built a chapel for 150 people. Up till today, many changes having been added to this Christ redeemer: lighting has been added and panoramic elevator and stair case have been added for the ease of tourists.
The statue has been used in many Hollywood movies to depict many things. Recently it was used in the apocalyptic movie 2012, where Christ the Redeemer was shown being destroyed as a result of the world.
This phenomenon was also featured on Sony billboards of the movie which showed Christ the Redeemer tumbling to its destruction. The concept really disturbed and offended many Brazilians and they demanded Sony to take down the billboard images immediately.
