Michael Phelps claims he will not return to swimming after he retires – Swimming News

The fourteen-time Olympic gold medallist, Michael Phelps has claimed that he will not make a comeback to competitive swimming like Ian Thorpe.

The 26-year-old American star backed his statement by saying that, “I won’t be making any comebacks. Once I retire, I’m retired.”

The Australian comeback king, Ian Thorpe retired from competitive swimming in 2006 but returned to his beloved sport in February 2011, as he wanted to qualify in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games but his hopes were shattered when he failed
to make his way into the team.

While praising the efforts of Australian legendary swimmer, Thorpe, Phelps said, “One thing that I saw differently about him this time than I have in past is when he was essentially saying that he was going to fail.”

“There is a quote that he said in the paper, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t make the team. And he’s never ever been like that in the past. That kind of surprised me a little bit,” Phelps added.

While responding to a question regarding Thorpe’s shattered London dreams, Phelps stated, “It’s very sad that I’m not going to have the chance to swim against him again. He’s one of the best.”

While talking about his participation at the 2012 London Games, Phelps stressed that first he needs to prove his mettle at the US trials for the Olympic Games.

“You’ll know the very last day of the Olympic trials, that will be the first week in July,” said Phelps.

When asked if he had too much pressure on him in a bid to defend his titles at the forthcoming battle royal, Phelps said, “I know whatever happens will happen, and whatever I do in the water to prepare myself, that’s what will come out that day. So hopefully
we are ready when the time comes.”

The US Olympic trials are scheduled in the first week of July and these trials will depict the performance of American great swimmer, Phelps at the London Olympics.
