West Indies brush aside Australia to go 2-1 up in the series
Saturday, March 24th, 2012 2:48:14 by Taha HabibWest Indies take a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series as they cruised past Australia by 42 runs in the fourth ODI at St. Lucia. Australia included Ben Hilfenhaus in the playing XI at the expense of Nathan Lyon. The home team added Adrian Barath at the
top of the order, axing Kieron Powell.
Batting first, Windies made 294/6 in their allotted 50 overs courtesy of a quick-fire century from Kieron Pollard and a breezy 31 not-out from captain, Darren Sammy. Barath allowed the hosts to get off to a rapid start making 41 off 31 balls and adding 56
for the first wicket with Johnson Charles.
Darren Bravo and Dwayne Bravo once again failed to impress with the bat and made 25 and 0 respectively. Marlon Samuels failed to convert his patient start to something substantial and was caught behind for 11 off 41 balls.
Pollard and Andre Russell added 94 runs for the sixth wicket before Russell was caught by George Bailey off Shane Watson for 34. The hard hitting Gladiator completed his century off 69 balls to eventually get out for 102. His innings included five fours
and eight sixes.
Sammy made 16 runs of the final over of the innings from Brett Lee to propel his team’s score to 294/7. Lee, Watson and Xavier Doherty picked up two wickets apiece. Clint McKay picked up one wicket.
Australia made a delightful start to their chase but David Warner soon lost his wicket for 1 off Dwayne Bravo. Watson and Peter Forrest added 53 for the second wicket before Sammy picked up both Watson and Forrest in the space of 6 runs. Bailey and Mike
Hussey added 59 for the fourth wicket before the former was removed by Russell for 25.
Hussey added just one more run with his brother David Hussey and also lost his wicket to Russell for 26. Matthew Wade and David added 67 for the sixth wicket before Pollard intervened and got Wade out for 15.
Hussey also soon left the scene for 57. He was cleaned by Kemar Roach. Lee smacked a few lusty hits but still could not take his side over the line and was the last man out for 59 off 48 balls including five fours and as many sixes.
Roach, Bravo, Sammy and Russell picked up two wickets each. Sunil Narine and Pollard picked up one wicket apiece as Aussies folded for 252. Pollard was declared the Man of the Match. The last match will take place at the same venue on Sunday, March 25.
