Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG: The tech geek’s preview – Part 1

Not a long time ago, the moniker ‘Ultrabook’ was taken for laptops that boasted a small 13-inch screen, a very thin chassis, no optical drive and a low- to middle-end graphics card. However, the concept is changing fast and new notebooks pouring in the market are soaking more and more specifications in. The latest device from Acer, Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG is one that exemplifies above premise.

The new Ultra M3-581TG is one of many Ultrabooks, a label that is a certification from Intel for ultra-thin notebooks that meet specific criteria that are coming to the market this year. I am however, totally baffled by Intel on the audacity to cannibalize such a brand that might actually help the Windows-based thin laptops break Apple’s market share.

Except the thin structure, this device has nothing that would align with the notebooks we saw last year or at the start of this term.

DVD drive, dedicated high-end Nvidia graphics and larger hard drive options are some of the features that are included in the Ultra M3-581TG. Portability, on the other hand, is not exactly what you would compare to 13-inch ultrabooks. The Ultra M3 is 4.4 pounds, but it is .79 inches thick. Of all of these, the biggest novelty of this Timeline is that it’s the first ultrabook (as defined by Intel) to feature Nvidia graphics. It won’t be the last.

I first heard about the Timeline Ultra at this year’s CES, and the first reaction I had was: “how is this different from previous Timelines?” That’s a good question, and a hard one to answer. Really, the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG looks like…a large, thin laptop. It’s certainly not shocking or design-forward, and has nowhere near the visual appeal of the Acer Aspire S5, a 13-incher that’s a closer fit to the MacBook Air breed of ultrabook.
