Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG: The tech geek’s preview – Part 2
Saturday, March 24th, 2012 5:49:34 by Usman KhalidThe Timeline Ultra M3 has clean lines, a matte black plastic body, and an aluminum lid. The entire laptop’s construction has a hollower feel than the rock-solid metal build of a MacBook Air or even the Razer Blade. This Acer has the veneer of a budget-level machine, and the keyboard and screen to match.
The notebook although has a full-fledged keyboard that even boasts a number pad but all the keys still feel crammed into a small chassis. However, that deficiency in size has been overcome by the design and construction of the keys. The flat shape and matte finish offers a good feel while typing and despite the small size, the typing went down quite fluently, without many errors.
On the other hand, the keyboard is not backlit. Despite being an ultrabook and entering the arena at a time when the market is saturated by Toshiba Portege and HP Folio, not to mention the Apple Macbook Air, the keyboard lack of light in the keys is a shortfall. This might sound too amateur to predict but many laptops have made sales this year because of lit keyboard that glows in the dark and gives a very gothic feeling.
The touchpad on the other hand, has a real estate that won’t quit. Because of big screen that has to be catered to, the presence of a big touchpad should be taken as a necessity more than a luxury. However, it isn’t as smoothly operating as I’d hoped. It works, but scrolling through documents and pinch-to-zoom actions sometimes tended to gum up.
