Dev Whatmore satisfied with Pakistan’s performance in Asia Cup
Monday, March 26th, 2012 1:29:08 by Rana Nasir GhafoorPakistan’s newly appointed coach Dev Whatmore is pleased with the way his side performed in the recent Asia Cup.
Although he was completed satisfied with Pakistan’s progress, he stated that it would have been icing on the cake to beat old rivals, India, in the first round match.
Pakistan lifted the trophy after twelve years, defeating Bangladesh by a couple of runs in the thrilling final. It was Whatmore’s first series with Pakistan after taking over charge from stand-in coach, Mohsin Khan.
"It would have been the icing on the cake to have beaten India and go on to win the cup. We made some mistakes but were in the game late in the second 50-over block. It was just one of those games that makes you analyse more," Whatmore told
AFP.
The highlight of Asia Cup was Bangladesh’s wonderful performance. The Bengali Tigers made it to the final following their first round wins over India and Sri Lanka.
Whatmore admired Bangladesh’s superb show, adding that the Asia Cup hosts need to be consistent to get similar results in the future.
"Bangladesh had a really good Asia Cup. On the evidence of this tournament, everyone would agree they have improved. They need to be consistent now," he said.
After Pakistan’s embarrassing loss to India, Pakistan skipper Misbah-u-Haq came under heavy fire. When Whatmore asked about the pressure on Misbah, he shared, "I wasn’t aware Misbah was under pressure prior to the Asia Cup. He has some wonderful qualities
as a captain and contributed well to our overall performance."
The Men in Green have a few weeks of rest ahead of their tour to Sri Lanka in May. After visiting Sri Lanka, the side is scheduled to meet Australia in five one-dayers later this year.
Twenty20 World Cup is another mega event Pakistan are eyeing this year. The experts are asking team management to build special line-up for the World T20 championship, and it will definitely be an uphill task for Whatmore and his support staff.
