Lutfi’s KRL win Challenge Cup
Monday, March 26th, 2012 4:40:15 by Shahrukh SohailTariq Lutfi’s men stormed to a win in the KPT Challenge Cup after ousting KESC on penalties.
KESC went into the final as firm favourites owing to the talent in their ranks but it was KRL who came out on top, after things were level during normal time.
Goalkeeper Jahangir Shah became the hero on the night, as his saves kept out KESC and ensured victory for Lutfi’s men.
After the game, former Pakistani skipper Muhammad Essa revealed that his side were confident of a victory but unfortunately were unable to achieve that despite their best efforts.
“When the game ended in a goalless draw, I was sure that we will win it but luck deserted us during the penalty shootout. We were really hurt by the absence of injured Aurangzeb Baba and Moosa. We needed them more for the vital clash,” he said.
Tariq Lutfi, who has been over critical of his team’s displays in the last few games finally revealed that he was satisfied this time around.
“I am really happy with the victory. We had dominated the field play and had broken KESC’s defence but could not score goals. Yasir Afridi did a fine job and then on penalties our players kept cool that completed the job.”
Pakistan International Kamran Khan also admitted his surprise after scooping up the best player award of the tournament.
“I did not expect that I will be able to win the best player award.”
Lastly, Muhammad Rasool, who had been in deadly form going into the tie, revealed that although there was no pressure on him to perform, he still missed his spot-kick, something which ultimately cost his side the game.
“There was no pressure on me but I don’t know why my kick in penalty shootout went off. But it’s part of the game and I am happy with my performance,” the Chitrali striker was quoted as saying.
