The Prime Minister of Pakistan Yusuf Raza Gilani and the President of United States of America Barack Obama on Tuesday vowed to rescue the troubled anti-terror alliance between the two countries, which has reached its all-time low over the past 10 months
of recriminations and mistrust.
The two leaders said this while addressing a joint press conference in Seoul on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit. This was the first highest-level exchange between the two countries since the killing of Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in a secret
US raid on Pakistani soil in May last year.
The Pak-US ties hit the rock bottom after a Nato/ISAF attack on two Pakistan border outposts on November 26, 2012 killed 24 Pakistan soldiers, an incident that prompted Islamabad to cut Nato Supply line through its territory besides curtailing CIA-guided
drone attacks and eliminating US soldiers from the Shamsi airbase.
“There have been times – I think we should be candid – over the last several months where those relations have had periods of strains,” Obama told reporters as the meeting opened.
“But I welcome the fact that the parliament of Pakistan is reviewing, after some extensive study, the nature of this relationship. I think it’s important to get it right. I think it’s important for us to have candid dialogue, to work through these issues,”
he added further.
The Pakistan Prime Minister said that his country is also committed to fighting against terrorism but not at the cost of its own integrity.
“We are committed to fighting against extremism. We want stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We want to work together with you,” Gilani told Obama
