James Magnussen in limelight as Alain Bernard out of the 2012 London Olympic Games

The 100m freestyle world champion, James Magnussen remains the strongest contender for gold medal of his main event at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old Magnussen, who just frightened his competitors by posting a 47.10 seconds effort at the Australian Selection Trials for the Olympic Games, would not be able to face the defending champion, Alain Bernard of France as he failed to qualify in
his main event for the upcoming Olympics.

Bernard was overpowered by Yannick Agnel, who posted 48.02 seconds to acquire the national crown. “I’m not going to get carried away because there is a lot of work to do before I can reach the level of the Australian,” said Agnel after his victory.

Nevertheless, Bernard has a chance to make his way in the French 4*100m freestyle relay team to London.

On the other hand, Australian swimmer, Magnussen, who is targeting the world record of 46.91 seconds, said, “I don’t really know what people’s reactions are, but I’m not all that worried either, When you look back over the years at the great 100 freestylers,
you look at the likes of (Alexander) Popov and (Pieter) van den Hoogenband.”

“If, in 10 years time, people could look back at the event and mention my name, I’d feel pretty privileged. It’s definitely a legacy I want to leave and it’s something that I’m striving for,” he added.

I’m pretty exhausted actually, both mentally and physically. I haven’t really had a chance to sit down and take stock of the week and what has happened. But once I get a chance to sit back and basically have time to let it sink in, I’m sure I’ll be very
proud. But at the moment, I’m still pretty excited, just pumped,” said Magnussen.

The Australian veteran is very confident that he will break the Cesar Cielo’s world record of 46.91 seconds and so far, has shown no signs of slowing down. With just a few months left in the beginning of London Olympics, it would be interesting to see how
things turn up at the mega stage of sports.
