Watson, Hussey leads Australia to victory in the first T20

Shane Watson and Michael Hussey led Australia to victory in the first of the two T20’s played at the Beausejour Stadium, St. Lucia on Tuesday, March 27. The Kangaroos won by eight wickets to go one up in the series after the five-match ODI series ended all
square 2-2.

Winning the toss and batting first, Johnson Charles and Dwayne Smith got the innings off to a decent start before Smith fell to Lee for 10. Charles added 19 for the second wicket with debutant Nkrumah Bonner before the former fell LBW to Watson.

Darren Bravo continued his miserable run with the bat and managed only 12 runs before getting caught at deep mid-wicket of Daniel Christian. Bonner soon left the scene for 24 after Christian uprooted his stumps leaving the Windies stranded at 72/4.

Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard added a quick-fire 72 for the fifth wicket before Bravo offered a simple catch to David Hussey for 14. Pollard continued his impressive run and completed his half century of just 20 balls with the help of five sixes and two
fours.

The home side managed 150 runs in their allotted 20 overs with Pollard staying unbeaten at 54. Christian picked up three wickets while Brett Lee bagged two. Watson picked up the other wicket to fall while Carlton Baugh was run-out.

Australia made a poor start to their chase and lost David Warner in the first over to Krishmar Santokie. Watson and Mike Hussey added 108 for the second wicket before the former fell to Garey Mathurin for a well made 69.

Hussey and George Bailey ensured that the Aussies did not lose any more wickets as they surpassed their target in 18.1 overs with Hussey staying not-out at 59 and Bailey 21. Santokie and Mathurin picked up a wicket each.

Watson was declared the Man of the Match. The next game will be played at Bridgetown on Friday, March 30,  before the test series commence on April 7.
